Duties

The responsibilities described below are for the full-performance level (GS-06). At the GS-05 grade level, duties are similar but will be performed under closer than normal supervision. As the employee progresses, the assignments will become more difficult and complex in preparation to fully perform the duties at the next grade level.

As a Back Wages Assistant, duties will consist of but not limited to the following:

  • Reviews material to determine type of case (e.g., Act collected under, net or gross total or installment, inclusion of interest, damages, court cost, penalties, less than full amount collected, etc.), checks amount received against judgment and availability of information needed to disburse, and sets up individual accounts, as necessary.
  • Establishes payment procedures, in consultation with Back Wage Specialists.
  • Answers telephone, written, and personal inquiries.
  • Confers with attorneys and Back Wage Specialists on cases to disburse back wages and resolve discrepancies.
  • Records payments received in the automated Back Wage Financial System (BWFS), ensuring crediting to the correct employer record, and depositing in the appropriate Agency Location Code (ALC) account with the Federal Reserve Bank, ensuring appropriate Treasury, Financial, DOL and WHO procedures are followed.
  • Composes correspondence, mostly without review, and furnishes appropriate information on status of back wage payments.

Requirements Conditions of Employment

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the education and/or specialized experience and the proficiency requirements described below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include but not limited to:

  • Utilizing technology (automation equipment, software and processes) to perform administrative functions such as, file maintenance, document management/organization, composing memorandum, letters and reports.
  • Familiarity with wage/hour/labor laws (federal or civilian).
  • Processing accounts payable/accounts receivable.
  • Inputting data into automated systems.
  • Responding orally and in writing to customer inquiries and complaints.

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

-OR-

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Proficiency Requirement: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
